Antipsychotic drugs

flat,550x550,075,fA German study just published by Moritz and colleagues provides an interesting insight into antipsychotic drugs used in the treatment of schizophrenia and other psychotic illnesses. Data was collected by asking psychiatric patients to complete a questionnaire about their experiences in taking antipsychotic medication for their mental disorder. The conclusion was that such drugs are effective because they dampen emotion rather than treating any specific symptoms. ‘Doubt, numbing and withdrawal were the main subjective antipsychotic effects’. Basically such drugs just keep patients quiet – an effect which many patients find unpleasant. One reviewer says ‘It is clear we need better ways to help people’.

You can read fuller details of the study here (which contains some evaluative points) and here.

    Hi Cara,

I wondered if you could tell me how many AO1/AO2 marks you’d write for a 4+6 mark/4+8 mark/ and 8+16.

I seem to be baffled by the marking.

    Kindest Regards,

    Lucy.

    Hello Cara’

I have read the pages on the ‘Issues with classifcation and diagnosis with Phobias’ page on the A2 companion book;i was thinking about adding extra content to my essay,if the question came up- in terms of cultural bias?

Reason being, i don’t think i will be able to remember every single point on reliability/validity which was mentioned in the book.I have tried my best to memorise it,but they just won’t stick in my head.

So I have found this on wikipedia:’

‘some communities such as in Papua New Guinea and South America (except Chile, Colombia, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and Bolivia), spiders are included in traditional foods. This suggests arachnophobia may be a cultural, rather than genetic trait. In western societies as many as 55% of females and 18% of males are estimated to experience arachnophobia”

Overall ,for my essay, could i just sum it up and say something along the lines of ;’the issue of culture bias is evident in the diagnosis and classifcation of phobias. For example ,specific phobias like Arachnophobia.
Spiders are classed as a delicatessen in certain southern american communties;whereas in other parts of the world;this would be deemed as abmnormal, hence why it is classed as a phobia in the DSM.This raises the issue that classifcation of certain phobias may be perhaps culture bound.

Does that make sense Cara?Im not sure if i should include in in my essay ,but i know for a fact that this point will stick in my head as I’m really scared of spiders so i can sort of relate to it!

Anyway,I Hope you get this before tomorrow.

    Thanks
